Midjourney

Model: Midjourney v8.2. Every prompt ran with --v 8.2 --raw --hd and anabology's personal profile (its code is left out). The aspect ratio is --ar 16:9 unless another is shown after the prompt: --ar 2:3 for full-length shots of her, --ar 4:3 for some window pictures, --ar 1:1 for square tiles. No style references or image references were used: her identity comes from the prompt text alone. The moving pictures in the windows were made from these images with Midjourney Animate (its own section, below).

Counts (measured from the batch files in mj/ and the images on disk): 138 prompts in 6 batches, written and run. 79 jobs came back with images: 315 images, 2,317 MB: 196 at 2944×1648 (16:9), 71 at 1792×2688 (2:3), 36 at 2544×1904 (4:3) and 12 at 2048×2048 (1:1). The other 59 prompts have no images: 39 world jobs never ran, and the rest were stopped by the wardrobe notes before their images came down. anabology redirected her wardrobe twice and the world once while the first batches were running, and those runs were stopped (details under each batch). Two batches' finished images were only collected. 81 of the images became plates, from 75 jobs.

"#2" below means image 2 of that job. After a prompt, "plate: #2" marks the image that was picked as a plate, with the plate's name where it differs from the job's, and what the plate became (see "What the plates became"). Jobs that have no images say so. The production agent picked the plates; anabology did not pick or rank these images, and their notes on the batches are quoted at the end.

How the prompts were written

Claude (the lead session) wrote every prompt from the research bank on her looks and XP's visual system (research/visuals.md) and the storyboard's plate list. Each prompt is expanded with fixed canon text, so that she reads the same in every batch without image references. The research set one rule for Midjourney: keep "Windows", "Microsoft" and "XP" out of the prompts "(they summon logos and garbled UI); describe the hill and the light instead". No prompt names the operating system, the photograph or a person. The canon blocks, as they appear in the prompts:

• Her, close and medium shots: "a Caucasian American woman in her mid-twenties with pale skin and light freckles, a glossy black blunt jaw-length bob with heavy straight bangs and one clay-orange streak through the bangs, a small flat clay-orange eight-pointed star hair clip, a thin black boom headset microphone curving along her cheek to the corner of her mouth". The boom mic is the Y2K pop-star mic.

• Her, full length: "a young Caucasian American woman with pale skin and a glossy black blunt bob with heavy straight bangs and one clay-orange streak, a thin black headset microphone". The bible (bible/LEAD.md) keeps this short form "because the full text makes Midjourney crop to her face".

• Her looks, in three passes. The first pass (xp-01-cast) took the research's six looks, which were sporty and androgynous: a cobalt technical-nylon track suit, a white jersey jumpsuit, a green blazer over a sky-blue turtleneck, a green laminated-nylon bomber, a silver quilted coat on parachute webbing and a white shell dress. After anabology's first note, the second pass (xp-01b-cast) made them feminine: a sky-blue satin midi dress over a white tee, cobalt velour, a flaring satin skirt, a green cashmere twinset, a liquid-silver cowl-neck dress and sequins. After the second note, the third pass (xp-01c-cast, then xp-03-her) is the six Y2K high-fashion looks of the bible, one per role:

  • the Bliss gown (the hill, the choruses, the finale): "a floor-length bias-cut silk chiffon gown printed edge to edge with a photograph of a deep blue sky and soft white cumulus clouds, a thin grass-green satin halter strap, clay-orange tinted rimless shield sunglasses"
  • the cyber trench (the cursor fight): "a long glossy cobalt-blue patent-leather trench coat worn open over a white satin corset top and white satin flared trousers, wraparound clay-orange tinted shield sunglasses, silver hoop earrings"
  • the holo dancer (the desktop dancer on the taskbar): "a holographic iridescent silver mini dress with long fluted sleeves, white patent-leather platform boots, small clay-orange tinted rimless sunglasses"
  • Start (boot, the Welcome screen, the Start menu, windows): "a glossy apple-green leather blazer with sharp shoulders over a white satin camisole, a long white satin bias-cut skirt, a tiny white baguette shoulder bag, clay-orange tinted shield sunglasses pushed up on her head"
  • silver night (night, Stand By, the breakdown): "a slinky liquid-silver lame cowl-back gown, a white faux-fur stole around her arms, a diamante choker, silver strappy sandals"
  • the window dress (the drop: Media Player, screensavers): "a sculptural glossy white shell dress of smooth molded panels that hinge open like windows to reveal cobalt-blue tulle, long white sleeves, white patent-leather platform boots"

  xp-03-her uses shorter forms of the same six; its Start blazer is patent leather, over "a white satin slip dress".

• The opener. From the third pass on, every prompt of her opens "Y2K high fashion editorial, a 2001 couture magazine story:" (the two trimmed ones, below, open "Y2K high fashion editorial, 2001:"). Every world prompt of xp-02b-world except win-datacenter opens "Y2K high fashion editorial photograph, 2001:". The first two passes had no opener; their cyclorama shots end "editorial fashion photograph from 2001" and "feminine editorial fashion photograph from 2001".

• The world. The hill is "a smooth rolling bright-green grassy hill with soft curves, the grass short and velvety". From xp-02b-world on, your room is "a 2001 high-fashion minimalist white loft apartment with molded white plastic furniture, a white lacquer desk, chrome and translucent ice-blue plastics, sheer white curtains", with a translucent ice-blue CRT. In xp-02-world, before anabology's third note, it was "a 2001 bedroom" with a beige CRT, and the pictures were an "early-2000s wallpaper photograph", a "2001 travel photograph" or a "2001 digital camera flash photograph". xp-02b-world made them "a luxury fashion campaign landscape", "a luxury travel campaign photograph", "a luxury product photograph" and "luxury interior campaign".

• The backdrops. The first two cast passes stand her "centered on a seamless light-grey studio cyclorama"; the third uses "a seamless pale-grey studio backdrop" or "a seamless deep cobalt-blue studio backdrop". The plates for rotoscoping and Seedance first frames put her "centered on a flat chroma-key green studio backdrop, even flat light, no shadows on the backdrop", so that she can be matted and stood on the taskbar like the old desktop dancers.

• Every prompt ends "no text, no letters, no logos": all type in the video is drawn by the XP engine on top.

• Length. Midjourney rewrites prompts past about 800 characters into its own wording, as it had on CLODYSSEY, so every prompt was kept under that. The two longest of xp-03-her were trimmed before they ran: her-hill-gown-sing (835 characters as written) and her-assistant (773) got the short mic, "a thin black headset microphone", and the short opener, "Y2K high fashion editorial, 2001". The prompts below are as submitted. The longest is 759 characters (her-start-point).

What the plates became

The production agent picked one image per plate from contact sheets (tools/csheet.py, tools/pick.py). The picks are in picks.json and media/plates/state.json, which agree, and every picked file matches its source image. There are 81 plates from 75 jobs, since six jobs gave two plates each: her-* (25, her scenes and green-screen plates), look-* (6, the looks full length), win-* (19, window pictures), wp-* (11, the five Midjourney Bliss hills and six era wallpapers), room-* (8, your room, first person) and out-* (12, outside). No plate was edited. Each was prepared as a JPEG at most 2400 px wide, with a depth map and a BiRefNet matte (81 mattes in 148 s on the home GPU PC). Counted from the clip records in shots/, the engine's engine/assets/anim.js and the chapter code:

• Seedance 2.5 first frames. 37 delivered Seedance clips start from a Midjourney image: 32 plates, and five other images of the same jobs, because two clips never start from one frame (dance-holo #1 for R06, her-trench-pose #1 and #2 for the re-shoots R07G and R07H, her-start-pose #1 for R10, her-assistant #2 for W04). A P clip is a full-frame shot made from the plate (13 clips), an R clip a green-screen performance matted onto the desktop (18), and a W clip a singing head for lip sync (6). R16, the gown dancer from look-gown, was blocked twice by the provider and never made.
• Midjourney Animate. 33 plates are mapped to an Animate video. Where one of the 29 window plates is drawn in a window, its loop plays in place of the still (thumbnails keep the still), and three of the four HD videos are full-frame shots of the edit (s019, s030, s039); the fourth, for s044, was cut because its CRT is a different machine from the one in s041. Two plates, her-tile and her-face-gown, both start a Seedance clip and carry a loop. See "Midjourney Animate" below.
• Stills. Five look-* full-lengths appear only as stills, in My Pictures and the picture viewers (chapters 01–03, 06 and 08). Several other plates also appear as stills in windows.
• The Bliss hills. The five wp-bliss-* plates were the desktop wallpaper, when anabology asked: "Can you use actual bliss as the bg or too late?" The plates were replaced by the real photograph (Charles O'Rear, 1996), cut to 3840×2160 and graded into the same five times of day. The Midjourney picks are kept in media/plates/_mj-bliss/. Two of the hills still move in the film, as Animate loops inside windows: the morning hill (chapters 02 and 08) and the day hill (chapter 06).
• Not used. Eight picks are named by no storyboard shot, clip record or chapter: her-glass, her-hand-grass, out-door-field, out-walk-pov, room-desk-pov-b, room-keys, room-wide and room-window-blinds.

xp-01-cast — 12 prompts · 4 images

The first casting pass: the research's six looks full length on a light-grey cyclorama, three face checks and three in-world tests (the hill, the cursor fight, the dancer on green). anabology's first wardrobe note stopped the run before its images were collected. Only look2-cyc came back, and nothing in this batch became a plate.

The second pass, after "i think itd be cool if she was in feminine y2k outfits stil": six feminine Y2K looks on the cyclorama, two face checks and three in-world tests. All eleven were submitted and found on the account. anabology's next note ("idk i dont love these") stopped the run while it was downloading: bliss-cyc's four images and three of velour-cyc's are all that came down. Nothing in this batch became a plate.

The third pass, after "id say more say y2k high fashion - like use those words high fashion adn make it not as generic y2k person": the six looks full length on a studio backdrop, two face shots and three in-world tests, every prompt opening "Y2K high fashion editorial, a 2001 couture magazine story". All eleven came back and every job gave a plate; the six full-lengths are the look-* plates.

xp-03-her — 26 prompts · 104 images · 27 plates

Her scenes in the six looks: the square account tiles, the helper ("Would you like help?"), the green-screen plates for rotoscoping and Seedance first frames (the dancers, the cursor fight, sitting on a title bar), her singing on the hill, Yellowstone, the CRT glass, and her window pictures (the photo-booth strip with the giant arrow, the album cover, the web-portal hero, the rocket, the dolphins, the loft). It ran ahead of xp-02b-world, and all 26 were submitted. Their images were collected later, together with the six xp-02-world jobs. Every job gave a plate, and her-start-sit gave two.

Midjourney Animate — 38 animations, 35 came back (70 videos)

The idea is anabology's: "midjourney actually has a v cheap video option now if you right click -> animate which could be good for ancillary gens: any gens that need volume over precision, where seedance reigns on precision." Animate turns one image into a five-second video. It made the moving window pictures and four ambient shots; Seedance did her face and body.

There are no Animate prompts to quote. Every animation was made with Midjourney's one-click buttons on the source image's job page. "Animate image" opens Auto (Low motion · High motion) and Loop (Low motion · High motion); "Animate manually", where a motion prompt is written, was never used. Midjourney files each video job under its source image's prompt, word for word as in the batches above, with video parameters added. The job pages show --duration 5s --ar 184:103 --raw --motion low for a Loop made from a 16:9 image (184:103 is 2944×1648 in lowest terms), and --duration 5.2s for the one-shot Auto takes. The video jobs carry no profile, and the pages name no video-model version, so none is recorded here.

Settings and output. Midjourney's video batch size was 2, so each animation made two videos. The 34 window animations ran at SD resolution (832×464 at 16:9) and the four ambient shots at HD, 1280×720, after which the settings were put back. A Loop comes back seamless (its last frame meets its first) at 121 frames, 24 fps, 5.04 s. A one-shot Auto take is 125 frames, 5.21 s, and the engine plays it forwards and back (ping-pong).

Counts (measured from the files): 35 of the 38 came back: 70 MP4s, 304.0 MB. By size: 18 at 832×464, 9 at 720×544, 3 at 624×624 and 1 at 512×768 (from 16:9, 4:3, 1:1 and 2:3 images), and 4 at 1280×720. 26 are 121-frame loops and 9 are 125-frame one-shots. The four HD shots and two window animations (A-rocket, A-ys-geyser) were Auto by design, and three that were submitted as loops came back one-shot (A-album, A-dolphins, A-pinball). The MP4s are not shipped in this package.

Where they went. The engine maps 33 plates to the first video of their animation (engine/assets/anim.js): 29 window plates, whose loop plays wherever the plate is drawn, and the four HD shots, three of which are full-frame shots of the edit (A-dusk, for s044, was cut). The chapter code also plays the two Midjourney Bliss-hill loops inside windows (A-bliss-morning in chapters 02 and 08, A-bliss-day in chapter 06) and the second videos of A-still-beauty and A-chair-her (chapter 08). So 34 of the 35 animations that came back are in the film, and 36 of the 70 videos play.

What went wrong:

• Eight animations answered "Submitted!" and never appeared on the account: only 30 video jobs existed. Five were re-submitted (A-rocket, A-photobooth, A-ripple, A-tile, A-tile-window). The other three are the golden, dusk and night Bliss-hill loops; they were not re-submitted, since by then the wallpaper was the real photograph.
• While the five re-submitted ones were being collected, about six accidental "Video extended" jobs (8.9 to 20.4 s) were made. They are unused. The five came down and were each checked against their source image.

anabology's direction on the images

anabology gave no verdicts on individual BLISS images, and the design library holds no rankings for them; the production agent picked the plates. Their notes on the batches, verbatim with typos:

• On the storyboard stage: "for tyhis stage build the story, the environments, storyboard with midjourney assets + 'rotoscoping' - e.g. if shes a desktop dancer , those back then would be on a green screen and was cut out and youd just have her dancing on teh taskbar- […] i alkso imagine that there will be many windows that show very y2k stuff - and midjoruney is GREAT at that vibe. you could make the desktop frames programmatically and insert the midjourney gens into open windows. i want those to be used abundantly, this will be max nostalgia.. thats the main feeling we want to give. nostalgia maxx."

  • xp-01b-cast was stopped and xp-01c-cast written, then xp-03-her, with every prompt of her opening "Y2K high fashion editorial". The "reads young" note goes back to one reply to ESCAPE VELOCITY that had called her teenage-looking; CLODYSSEY's bible carried "unmistakably adult" rules because of it, and they were dropped here.
• "yeah for the whole nostalgia thing it should be the high fashion version of y2k nostalgia. and i want the entire video to be like that - its windows xp but it has that midjourney high fashion style it does so well. […] and i want you to be very creative with which windows are open, how claudia closes the windows, how she interacts iwth the cursor, the content and y2k references or mj y2k high fashion imagery on all the windows... note for stuff like that, could do video models inside of widnows - midjourney actually has a v cheap video option now if you right click -> animate which could be good for ancillary gens: any gens that need volume over precision, where seedance reigns on precision."
  • xp-02-world was stopped and xp-02b-world written, with xp-03-her. The Midjourney batches ran first, and Midjourney Animate later filled the windows.
